Local integration of renewal energy technologies for water & fuels supply inthe arca of Fragocastelo( south of creta)

Objetivo

This project will investigate the integration of several renewable energy technologies for water and fuel supply in the semi ahandoned area of Fragocastelo in south of Crete. The conception of the system has to fulfil the goal to be integrated in the region solving crucial local economical and social problems, not only by respecting the environment but solving existing environmental problems (soil erosion etc) in the area. The project includes research on the overall conception and energy management of the system and research for the technical conception, the sophisticated installation (Siting), the optimum interconnection and the functioning of different renewable energy technologies such as : 1. Technologies producing electricity directly and sophisticately interconnected in order to optimise power and energy use. These technologies are : - two wind energy turbine of a total power of 500 kW
- microhydraulic power station of 500 kW
- biomass power station driven by ethanol of 150 kWe
2. Isolated technologies connected to the above first category of technologies by receiving directly or indirectly part of the produced electricity. The purpose of these technologies is to minimise the energy demand dependence of the area from conventional fuels. These technologies are : -solar assisted heat pumps for water and space heating and cooling (hotels, greenhouses)
-Passive seasonal solar energy storage for space heating or cooling (houses) -Clean heat production" from biomass through gasification and gas burning in a multifuel diesel burner of high efficiency
-Two different species plantation (Sweet sorghum and Eucalyptus) for biomass production for energy in abandoned land
3. Automatic electronic control control system for the optimisation of the use of the produced energy. A mathematical model for the energy production and management will be built to optimise the system at any instant (many variables inputs). Following the model a power electronic system will be constructed and installed in order to optimise the integration assuring maximum efficiency There is an agreement with the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, Crete. (CIAM) , to use the whole system with its technologies as a training facility for the 70 students every year coming from different mediterranean countries.
