Objective PROJECT TITLE "Lung cancer near an industry in Lithuania with major emissions of airway irritants" %lBrief description of project %lThe aim of the project is to investigate the relation between air polution and lung cancer near an industry in Lithuania with major emission of airway irritants, including sulphuric acid, in central Lithuania, in Kedainiai. A large industrial complex manufacturing mineral fertilizers and sulphuric acid has resulted in major emissions of sulphur diopside, sulphuric acid, hydrogenfluoride, ammonia. %lThe area has the highest incidence of lung cancer in the country. the study has retrospective case-control design all lung cancer cases diagnosed among men in Kedainiai country.during years 1981-1991 are identified in the cancer registry and archives for causes of death. A total 253 cases are identified (there are about 70.000 inhabitants in country). The controls are identified in the same archive of death certificates, among men who had lived and died in Kedainiai country during the period 1981-1991. There are 1012 controls identified. the controls are frequency matched regarding age, information on smoking habits, passive smoking, occupations, work places, residential adresses during the lifetime will be obtained via questionnaires to close relatives. The exposure classification is based on measurements of air pollution near the industrial complex taken since the starting operations in 1966. A crude estimate suggests that about 10% of the population in the country lives in areas at high exposures, primarily in the countryside. %lDetermination of air pollution, smoking, occupational exposure will enable to asses the role of each factor as well as to study interactions.
