Objetivo EUROCARE 1 and 2 have been successful in gathering together, checking the quality, editing and analyzing data on survival and care of 31 population based European cancer registries. As reliable cancer registration has been established for a long time in a number of Eastern European countries, EUROCARE also includes data from some cancer registries belonging to them; The basic results (which are being published in the volume "Survival of cancer patients in Europe", as a IARC scientific publication) showed important survival differences between countries. There are several indications that survival in the Eastern European countries is lower than in the western ones. In some cases the reasons could be identified in different diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, which are investigated by EUROCARE 2; Some care practices for cancer patients, which are adapted in Western countries can be identified as suitable standards to attain in the planning of health care in the Eastern countries.
