Obiettivo The objectives of the EURODEM concerted action are to study variation in the incidence of dementia in Europe and to study risk factors for dementia, specifically for Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. To achieve these objectives data will be pooled from seven populationbased follow-up studies on risk factors for dementing diseases. Since the design of these cohort studies, it has become increasing evident that cardiovascular (CV) factors may make an important contribution to the risk for dementia and its intermediaries, cognitive dysfunction and specific brain changes. Furthermore, the risk for these adverse outcomes may be increased through processes that begin in middle age. More detailed examination of the relation between cardiovascular risk factors and dementia is particularly important from a prevention perspective because factors initiating or promoting vascular mechanisms can be modified through behavioral or pharmaceutical intervention. As a part of EURODEM's objectives EURODEM centres collected information on cardiovascular risk factors with the aim of performing cross-centrecomparisons of the distribution of cardiovascular risk factors and their association with dementia To enhance the comparison, we are requesting funds for the inclusion of an existing Polish cohort established to study cardiovascular risk factors. This cohort has been maintained by the Unit of Clinical Epidemiology and Population Studies, School of Public Health, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland since 1982. With funds requested in this submission, we can facilitate the incorporation of the Polish cardiovascular cohort into the EURODEM network and: 1) compare the distribution of cardiovascular risk factors in Poland to other European centres represented in the EURODEM network; 2) develop expertise in neuroepidemiology among researchers from the Unit of Clinical Epidemiology and Population studies. These activities will enable the Unit to design and implement a study, based on the EURODEM protocol, to test hypotheses generated by the comparison of the Polish data with data from other EURODEM centres.
