Cross-disciplinary approaches to changes in demographic patterns in mediterranean Europe 3000BC - AD1800

Obiettivo

This application is for the Department of Archaeology of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, to join the POPULUS PRoject, which is seeking to establish a common series of research goals and standards in Mediterranean landscape archaeology so as to advance the study of the ancient demography of the region on a broad comparative front. The project is doing this by uniting six EU universities in a research network, five of them hosting working parties and employing research assistants in the general fields of GIS (Leicester), demographic modelling (Durham), geo-archaeology (Aix), ceramic studies (siena) and geophysical and related non-invasive techniques (Pisa). The major outcome of the project will be the publication of colloquia accompanied by a series of technical manuals identifying best practice. It is proposed that selected Ljubljana staff join the POPULUS Working parties, and that Ljubljana appoints.a Research Assistant to support their activities. The addition of Ljubljana will bring new research expertise and experiences to the network, provide opportunities for important new experimental work, and strengthen the outcomes of the POPULUS project in terms of an enhanced comparative framework for identifying best practise within the full range of environments of southern Europe. The addition of Ljubljana to POPULUS will thus conform with the Commission's stated priority that PECO contributions should extend the scope of the original project and not simply re-distribute tasks among the participants.
