Lasers, atoms and molecules: dynamical interactions

Ziel

The current application is an attempt to extend an existing HCM sponsored collaboration with the title, "Lasers, atoms and molecules: dynamical interactions", with two well known and prominent Eastern Europe research groups:The group lead by professor A.Kluchrev in Saint petersburg (Russia) and the group lead by professor R. Ferber in Riga (Latvia). In both groups theory and experiments on laser-excited atoms/molecules are studied, which give these two groups a particularly large potential for interaction with all of the groups in the present HCM project.
Both groups have achieved important scientific firsts. E.g. the Saint Petersburg group was the first group ever to investigate collisions between excited alkali atoms. This group's current projects include the very interesting investigation of (weak) collisions between highly excited, long-lived Rydberg atoms leading to energy-pooling and associative ionization. In the group of prof. Ferber collision dynamics of small laser-excited molecules in static magnetic and electric fields are investigated. It is their aim to explore new methods in collaboration with other groups on the dynamics of colliding molecules leading to new determinations in a direct way of charge distributions in the molecule, of great importance for other phenomena studied in our groups. Here also the possibility to explore these dynamics time-resolved is of great importance. It is the present Network's intension to let the two new members participate on an equal footing with the current participants, and thus with participation in the planned workshops and collaborations. In both cases the goal of mutual interaction with the present NETWORK is not possible without the active transfer of experimental and theoretical know how achieved during staff exchanges within the laboratories involved. The goals of the present proposal will be unobtainable without support from the Human Capital and Mobility Programme.
