Design and manufacturing of light cost-effective composite bicycle frame and components

Objectif

In a first stage, a review of the state of the art and a market research was carried out and the prototypes were defined and selected. We have proposed the study of the viability of producing bicycle frames in plastic, since this material presents multiple advantages in productivity design, look and price.

In the case of sports bikes, a racing bike prototype with a monocoque carbon frame of classic design has been chosen.

After identifying the prototypes, the technologies and material to be employed were defined. Later, after fine-tuning of production technologies, samples and sub-elements that have been characterized mechanically have been defined. Similarly, the prototypes have been designed (definition of geometry and material distribution) and calculated by finite element method (carbon frame) with the I-DEAS program.

The basis of this study has been the elaboration of prototypes. In a first phase a series of prototypes which have been divided and characterized has been elaborated. The data obtained has further enriched the mathematical model. A second series of prototypes has been equipped and evaluated with a simulator. With this data, a third series of further improved frames has been elaborated. The latter have been equipped with deformation sensors attached to a DAD. With this mechanism the real behavior of the bike on the road has been measured. Finally, the definitive prototypes have been made.

The advantages and economic and ecological benefits of the studied technologies have been evaluated.
