Plasma arc welding in the field of precious metals and their alloys

Objectif


The weldability of the precious metals supplied, was good but appeared to sometimes be of a lower level than expected. This is presumably caused by impurities, brought into the alloys during repeatedly recycling the material.

However, by adjusting weld parameters, for all alloys supplied, with the exception of a dissimilar Pt-Au weld, it was possible to get a good weldability.

In the welding of products it soon became clear, that much depended on design, mass and geometry of the products. The welding joint has to be accessible for the welding arc, the heat supplied sometimes surpassed the heat capacity of the product and the joint-configuration has to be suited for welding. In most cases the result is a weld, acceptable in integrity and strength. But in quite a few products the appearance of the weld was not acceptable according to standards of the industry. Those products have to be redesigned.

During the weldability and pilot-product trials the specification for the dedicated welding machine were established. When the machine came available, it appeared to be very well suited too for tack and spot welding. During the trials in an industrial environment this turned out to be a strongpoint. Tack welding by PAW simplifies joint preparation considerably, especially for large products, and brazibility is in no way hindered by the welding spots.

This is due to the special controls and very stable welding arc established by the dedicated machine.
