Objective The aim of this work is to develop a code that combines state-of-theart models for combustion and flow field computations to predict the speed and direction of the fire front in Mediterranean ecosystems. The following tasks will be carried out: - Development of models for flow field computation in complex terrain with localized heat input and minimal wind input data. - Determination of combustion properties of Mediterranean ecosystems which includes the basic classification of such ecosystems, according to biomass, density and conditions. - Physical modelling of turbulent flow in sloping terrain. - Determination and development of appropriate combustion models in modular form for biomass with particular emphasis to radiation effects. - Code integration, computational acceleration technique and graphics input and output showing the evolution of the fire front. The code shall be in modular form with different modules for each representative kind of vegetation and local atmospheric circulations which can be combined according to the site-specific conditions. Appropriate graphics and panels shall be included for easy input data entry and immediate utilization of the code output. Special attention shall be given to ensure very quick execution times. The code shall be designed with two functions in mind. The first is to assist in designing procedures for minimization of the extent of fires for historically susceptible areas. The second is to provide guidance to fire control of accidental or prescribed fires. Finally, an actual fire in either Greece or Portugal, which is well documented as possible, will be selected and simulated with the code, to provide experimental verification of the code validity and to test some of the parts which still need development.
