RESEARCH ON VARROA RESISTANT TRAITS IN EUROPEAN HONEY BEE RACES : A FIRST STEP TOWARDS BREEDING A VARROA RESISTANT HONEY BEE TO AVOID THE USE OF ACARICIDES IN HONEY BEE COLONIES AND TO PREVENT CONTAMINATIONS OF HONEY AND WAX

Objective

During 4 years, the 4 participants to this project will study the variability and heritability of Varroa resistant traits present in honey bee races to define the basis of a breeding and selection programme of Varroa resistant honey bees in Europe. Six tasks are distributed among 4 participants including also the development and use of a population dynamic model of the Varroa mite to evaluate the importance of the examined traits and feasible strategies for bee breeding.
