SEXUAL CYCLES AND GROWTH PERFORMANCE IN THE COMMON SEA-BREAM, PAGRUS PAGRUS, IN REARING CONDITIONS: APPLICATION TO SPAWNERS BREEDING AND SPAWNING INDUCTION

Objetivo

Rearing common sea bream, Pagrus pagrus, is already feasible but, until now, juveniles are caught in the wild and the sexual stages at which growth rates reach their highest values are not known. Thus, the scientists who are contractors of the project shall obtain biological data on reproduction and growth in Pagrus pagrus, usuable for aquaculture. These data will be used for two main practical aims.
The first main objective is to control reproduction of this hermaphrodite (protegeneous) species. Chronology of sexual cycles and sexual inversion, and ages at sexual maturity shall be defined, both for male and female. Finally a protocol for spawning induction shall be proposed. In this protocol, the quality of eggs (in terms of larvae viability) shall be taken into account.
The second main objective is to determine the physiological relationships between reproduction and growth in order to propose a rearing strategy for Pagrus aquaculture, which could reduce the time necessary for this fish to reach a market size. For instance, the use of monosexe population could be useful if a sexual diporphism could be demonstrated for growth. Such an implication needs to be justified by the accurate knowledge of the relationships between sexual stages and growth performances.
