NOVEL APPROACHES FOR THE CONTROL OF IRON CHLOROSIS IN FRUIT TREE CROPS

Objective

Since the application of lime for adjustment of pH in soils of fruit tree orchards fixers the Fe in soils, the prophylactic addition of synthetic chelates is necessary to avoid the occurrence of Fe chlorosis. To solve this cost intensive problem it is proposed to :
- Investigate the physiological and biological basis of resistance to Fe chlorosis;
- Develop a more appropriate screening method and select more tolerant genotypes;
- Establish an early diagnostic technique for a more environmentally friendly low input management system;
- Reduce at the end the production costs of fruit trees and to stabilize the product quality;
- To study alternative methods of low-input in established tree orchards for correction of iron chlorosis.
The species to be studied are mainly pears, peaches, Citrus and plums.
