POTENTIAL FOR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF WOOD BASED PANELS THROUGH ENHANCED PROCESS CONTROL BASED ON COMPARATIVE NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING DATA

Objective

European wood based panel industry aims at producing boards of high and constant quality, designed for special end uses.

Product quality depends on many cross linked variables and production parameter.

Production is based on recipes, that have been developed over long periods by using trial and error as optimizing strategy. This unsatisfying situation could be improved by implementation of expert system based production control (classical analytic regression models or modern FUZZY control systems).

To build up feed back systems real time information about production parameter and panel quality is necessary. Data acquisition for production parameter is already available, but to determine quality properties of the produced boards NDT methods are needed. Up to now only a few types of NDT-systems have been installed in panel production lines (particle MC, panel thickness, area weight, blow detection).

NDT-systems for assessing panel density profile, MOE, MOR, internal bond, particle size, glue distribution are being developed. One reason for the industrial management's low acceptance of NDT measuring systems is that a NDT-system is expected to deliver absolute quality values of the final panel product. In reality NDT measuring systems lore likely will be capable of delivering comparative data indicating changing panel quality. Modern control strategies can easily use this information instead of absolute values for optimizing the panel production process.

The proposed Concerted Action aims at closing the existing information gap between potential users of NDT methods and scientists developing such systems. Whereas panel industry does not want to invest in NDT-systems, because apparently these systems do not fit to their targets, scientist cannot prove the usefulness of their methods, because feed back control systems being capable of using information on relative property changes have not yet been realized.

The major objectives of the Concerted Action will be : Evaluation of the potential of NDT-methods, use of NDT-methods in modern control concepts (FUZZY), evaluation of the benefit of FUZZY systems in other branches, edition of the results in form of a catalogue to assist decision making processes and organization of a NDT-seminar for the panel industry, suppliers of machinery, measuring technique and process control.
