Development and implementation of a concept for improving safety at work by linking machine and process diagnosis systems with maintenance planning and control systems

Ziel

The purpose of the proposed project is to determine and define the technical and organizational requirements for improved safety, to devise a concept for improving safety standards by means of an expert system interface between diagnostic systems and maintenance planning and control systems and finally to implement this concept in a pilot firm within the iron and steel industry.

Diagnostic systems provide the input data for this interface, in which these data are suitably processed for use in planning and controlling maintenance to ensure adequate safety standards and are passed on to the corresponding computerized maintenance systems. This link ensures an automatic flow of data and information, starting from process or machine parameters and ending with safety-related planning and control data, e.g. on compliance with safety regulations. When such a system combination is used both planned action and very fast reaction is possible to deal with anticipated breakdowns and greater safety can thus be ensured for production and maintenance personnel while at the same time increasing plant availability.

Great importance attaches to planning and control of periodic and sporadic machine diagnosis using computer-aided maintenance systems, especially in the context of increasing safety for maintenance and production workers. A further aim is therefore to ensure that safety considerations and machine and process diagnosis are integrated within an overall concept for maintenance.

If suitably planned and controlled use is made of the aids available in machine diagnosis systems, they represent an effective means of reducing hazards, since the necessary inspections of plant while it is running can in part be carried out by instruments.

Further beneficial interaction resulting from the integration of machine and process diagnosis with the organization of maintenance consists in the use of maintenance logs, e.g. when determining diagnosis intervals and measuring points and constructing suitable data bases which can be exploited e.g. for safety purposes.
