Reduction of vibration exposure among users of hand held power grinders through reduction of grinding wheel imbalance

The aim of the project is to seek workplace application of the results of earlier ECSC funded laboratory and pilot studies in order to reduce the exposure of workers to the hazard of vibration. It is intended to reach this objective by optimising manufacturing tolerances on wheel imbalance and wheel bore/spindle clearances to achieve low vibration levels and good operator response at an acceptable product cost.
The results have demonstrated in the cases of 125 mm, 150 mm and 180 mm diameter wheels the need to restrict the use of wheels to those having the lowest possible initial imbalance in order to minimise the risk of VWF to grinder operators. For all wheel types clearance between wheel bore and grinder spindle should be limited to 0.2 mm. In the case of 180 mm and 230 mm diameter dpc wheels a mass imbalance limit of 4 g should be accepted as a short-term goal.
Within the steel industry there are a number of processes which require employees to use hand held power tools which produce high levels of vibration at the operator' hands. Continual exposure to high hand:arm vibration levels can result in a vascular disorder of the hand, known as vibration induced white finger (VWF) which in severe cases can result in interference with work and social activities such that the person may have to change his occupation. A survey of the usage of such tools in the UK steel industry indicated that the type of tool in much the most common use on a regular and prolonged basis was the hand held grinder.
