Identification of the most suitable extinguishing methods for fires on mine vehicles

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to supplement work done in Germany on the characterisation of mine vehicle fires (Tremonia trials) and fire-resistant tyres, and in the United Kingdom, where work has focussed upon the fire risks associated with brake overheating.

An analysis of fires on mine vehicles reveals that there are many potential causes (oil and fuel leaks, overheating of exhaust pipes and brakes, spontaneous combustion of coal deposits etc.) and that fire prevention, vehicle operation monitoring and fixed-position fire extinguishing devices could all be improved or modernised with a view to reducing risks and ensuring early detection and swift control of fires.

Whilst prevention measures depend on the ignitability and combustibility of the materials concerned as well as vehicle design, the main considerations in selecting detection and extinguishing devices are the different types of risk and the layout of the zones to be protected.

These two factors determine the criteria for selecting methods of protection and system installation and application: detector types, extinguishing agents, direction of injection nozzles or projection of powder, foam or inert gas, rate of application. The toxicological hazards associated with the products used and post-extinguishing residues must also be taken into account.

The objectives of the research project are:

- to assess the overall safety of a given vehicle by logging the common causes of accidents in the EC and the main features of mine vehicle fires, with a detailed analysis of potential fire risks and a critical analysis of fixed-position protection equipment and fire prevention measures currently in use;

- following experiments with methods of protection (detection, extinguishing), to identify the most suitable methods and validate their performance (efficiency, reliability) in order to ensure a high level of safety.

Implementation of the principles of detection and extinguishing developed in the course of the research will represent a step towards harmonisation of fire safety procedures in the EC.
