Harmonisation of fire safety test methods on conveyor belting for use underground in the European Community

Obiettivo

In the mining countries of the European Community different methods are still prescribed for flammability testing of conveyor belts. With the completion of the Internal Market and the associated requirement for dismantling of barriers to trade, these methods are to be harmonised. The aim is to align the fire resistance requirements for conveyor belts within the European Community.
A total of 8 different conveyor belts has been studied in the above countries according to their testing requirements. The test results were subsequently assessed with regard to existing correlations aiming at a possible reduction of the different test methods.

It showed that the propane grate test can be standardised, when the test requirements of the draft of EN W1 25, having been established by the working group 3 of CEN TC/188 are taken as a basis.
From the German point of view, besides a standardised propane grate test, the fire gallery test is absolutely necessary to maintain the German safety standard. If the fire gallery test should be abandoned, this would mean immediately that conveyor belts without self extinguishing properties could be applied in underground mining, a step backwards of safety standards of at least 20 years.
Eight different types of conveyor belt will be subjected to fire resistance tests in Belgium, France, Britain and Germany in accordance with the test specifications applying in the various countries. Each of these countries will provide two conveyor belts, each 60 m long.
