Research into and remedial action on psychological and organizational factors liable to cause accidents

Objectif


The results of this project confirm the suggestion that dissatisfaction influences the way the work is carried out and is therefore conductive to error which could result in the worker being injured. If this is the case, dissatisfaction may result in a disregard for safety, lack of communication or cooperation on safety matters, or loss of attention.
An analysis of the industrial accidents which have occurred in the last three years shows that the above-average accident rate is offset by a comparatively low degree of seriousness. They more often than not involved temporary incapacity and the infrequent cases of permanent after-effects were not generally serious.

Most accidents (roughly 70%) involved the upper or lower limbs. The survey revealed that around 100 workers had, during that brief period, been the victims of more than two accidents.

This state of affairs can be attributed either to lack of experience in the new job or to the manual context of underground operations but can be improved if the accident awareness of the workforce can be enhanced.

The aim of this research project is to seek out ways and means of reducing the scale of such events by analysing the sample of approximately 100 victims of more than two accidents.
