Cel The objective of the project was to design cost effective equipment that will prevent fires occurring on belt conveyors. The research has resulted in a cost effective method of detecting heat build up in rotating components of belt conveyors before fire can occur. The equipment developed is now in production and available for supply to the European Coal and Steel Community. The non-rotating face plate developed as the sounding alarm mechanism, also resolves the problem of heat build up due to conveyor belt fibres wrapping around roller spindles. The non-rotating face plate on conveyor rollers acts as a barrier to dust/water and considerably improves the performance of bearing seals. The solution is equally valid to other rotating components used in the mining and steel industry i.e. pumps, fans, haulage, pedestal type bearings etc.The project covered research into mechanisms that create heat in conveyor components and then develop methods to detect abnormal heat build-up before a fire can occur. Methods wee also investigated to eliminate fine coal from rotating elements by design.
