Locating concealed mine fires by means of thermographical measuring and evaluating instruments

Obiettivo

Underground heatings are usually detected by a slow increase in the CO concentration in the air. For concerted fire fighting e.g. object inertisation locating the fire zone exactly is required. Locating the fire zone by measuring the CO content is hardly possible. Because the transportation of heat through the strata takes place by heat conduction and air leakages, it is in principle, possible to locate a fire zone by thermographical measuring and evaluating instruments e.g. sensitive thermal imaging systems. some of the collieries' technical departments have such instruments. Until now there has been a lack of systematic investigation of the possibility to detect a fire zone and up to which strata thickness and kind of rock.

In the Experimental Mines's Great fire Gallery the location of heat sources shall be studied in different kinds of rock and different rock thickness by thermographical measuring instruments. Both new modifications of instruments and types of instruments will be used in the course of these tests.

Further on, the time will be determined elapsing from the beginning of a heating until it is possible to locate it.
