Improvement of methods of assessing disruptions in ventilation caused by mine fires. Application to type cases

Ziel

The basic aim is to improve current methods of allowing for the disruptive effect of mine fires in computer calculations of ventilation.

It is also hoped to improve the theoretical modelling of heat exchanges in the mine atmosphere and their effect on the ventilation.

Many commercial tools and informatic solutions are available for the simulation of complex ventilation schemes and the influence of combustion or fires in such systems, all based on varied theoretical models. However, models have not been completely validated with real scale experiments, because of the non-existence of laboratories or adequate test installations.

This makes interesting the possibility of validating such theoretical models making varied real scale tests with different ventilation conditions and heat source power. The results will be incorporated in computer calculation programs which will help mine technicians to the use of appropriate strategies for personnel evacuation and fire extinction.

As a consequence of that, AITEMIN (Spain) and INERIS (France), started the development of two complementary research projects, whose global objective was the improvement of existing computer models and programs for ventilation design and simulation, that take into account the disturbances caused by fires.

The AITEMIN project objective was to prepare a test site underground, in which real scale tests and other necessary experiments could be conducted. The results will be used for the validation of the INERIS model (VENDIS) in real fire conditions.
