Device to detect and prevent the risk of collision between travelling cranes or similar machines

Ziel

The aim is to design a system to prevent the risk of collision, sounding an alarm for the crane operator and, in modern installations, directly reducing the speed of the crane by applying the brakes.

Mechanical handling, particularly where travelling cranes are involved, has always posed the problem of collisions (either between cranes or between crane and buffer stop).

A number of 'anti-collision' systems have been installed in order to improve safety both for personnel and for equipment, for example:

- the Delachaux ATL system
- the Halberthal variable threshold alarm system.

These various systems hinder work at close proximity, making cranes stop and wait and thereby giving rise to frequent interruptions.

The research should give rise to a modular system consisting of a self-contained piece of equipment comprising a rangefinder, an electronic processing system and an interface.

Individualised parameters (crane functions) would be minimised. Each travelling crane in a bay would have the same equipment, which would be sufficient in itself, requiring no ground-based element. If one item was faulty, the other would still ensure safe operation. The rangefinder is a laser type, with the same effect as a radar device.

It can measure distances to within a few millimetres, at distances ranging from several decimeters to several hundred metres. Its response time will have to be short and constant in order to be able to calculate the differential and absolute speed and acceleration of travelling cranes on a worthwhile basis.
%Self-checking functions will be studied for their contribution towards ensuring a high degree of safety.

The project will be broken down as follows:

- Design
- Feasibility, calculations
- Equipment study
- Software study
- Production of prototypes (at least two)
- Installation (mechanical and electrical) on two cranes in a single bay
- Operational testing
- Performance testing and measurement (prevention and alarm system)
- Performance testing and measurement (automatic speed-regulating system for travelling cranes).
