Testing of a computer-aided system for automatic monitoring of fire detecting systems in underground mining

Objetivo



Mine fires become dangerous when they spread to combustible materials such as equipment made of plastics which are present over great distances and areas and/or in great quantities. Equipment of this type is the state of the art in today's underground mining. Reliable early detection of fires is indispensable to prevent heatings from developing into full-scale fires. As a rule mine fires are detected by CO monitors some of which are already controlled by computer systems. A computer program which can be run on a PC is already available on the market and is cheaper and more efficient than the large-scale data processing systems used so far. A large number of different signals can be recorded and analysed and alarm thresholds customised for the respective working unit can be input for each signal transmitter connected to the system. Some work has been done on this already but the programmes have only been developed for a special process control computer. The programme system allows the user to change the system without having to develop or buy new programmes or hardware components (interface). The new commercially available computer-aided monitoring system is to be tested for serviceability under mining conditions at the Tremonia experimental mine where, unlike in a production unit, all the facilities are available to test a system - which is so far not firedamp-proof and has not been approved - under simulated field conditions on an industrial scale.
