Mobile radio system for rescue operations

Obiettivo

All individual components of the rescue radio system - two-way handheld radio unit with ear phone and microphone units, central radio station, data radio coupler - were developed as prototypes, tested, and approved by BVS certificate.

The BVS approval certificate for the overall system was issued.

A complete system was set up. In two missions the system was successfully tested underground.

As to the possible range of the system the results of the experimental missions were better than originally specified. The functional reliability when using the easy-to-handle cartridge line could be proven for a range of up to 2000m. Furthermore the system is flexible, i.e. the system can be converted for using existing conductors of larger cross section with higher quality of communication. In the tests the system was given an extremely positive judgement by representatives of mine rescue brigades.
At present mine rescue services have only inadequate means of communication between the fresh air base and the rescue teams, comprising a pricker which is paid out as the team advances and to which the members of the team must connect up, which prevents permanent contact between the fresh air base and the teams or impairs the team's mobility.

In the EEC research project 'Ergonomic and technical development and design of communication system for underground mining' it was ascertained that free radio communication could not be used as a result of the lack of range in the unpredictable environmental conditions obtaining in an emergency underground. The leaky feeder principle is impracticable for a rescue team as the equipment is too heavy and cumbersome. This problem can only be solved by induction radio using the pricker as a wave guide. Some work has been done with an existing stationary inductive radio system and similar equipment has already been developed for stationary control and monitoring plant. This equipment must partly be modified or newly developed to conform with the requirements for mine rescue service operations.

Whilst the English research project 'Emergency communications' is intended to develop radio equipment for normal operations which, as far as possible, should offer a means of communication for buried miners in emergencies, the aim of this research project is to develop special equipment for the mine rescue teams. The main development targets are a mechanical and electrical equipment design commensurate with service conditions, resulting in ease of handling to enhance appreciably the safety and effectiveness of the rescue operation.
