Objective The objective of the research is the definition and development of a technique for the selective removal of cyanides in the effluents of steelworks or similar industries, in order, according the case:- to enable the direct discharge of the effluents into the aquatic environment (case of otherwise lightly polluted effluents),- to facilitate the biological purification of such effluents, by lowering their toxicity.A very favourable application case was identified following this research, effected in the laboratory. The obtained results justify the experimentation on the site on a pilot scale, in order to solve certain technological application problems and to validate the process on the technical and economical levels, and enable its industrial diffusion.Plan of work:- Selection from the following steel effluents of the ones most suitable for experiments: blast-furnace or cupola gas scrubbing water, coke-oven ammoniacal liquid, water from the cooling systems for very hot waste, effluent from metal surface treatment processes.- Implementation of a bibliographical study of the chemical reactions which can be used, and in particular, the production of glyconitrile by reaction between cyanides and formaldehyde, and removal of the glyconitrile by various means.- Sampling and analyses of real effluents in the steel plants of Lorraine and Belgium.-Experiments for treating these effluents, including dimensioning and establishment of optimum operational parameters.- In close cooperation with the CRM of Liege, a study of the impact properties of the effluent treated with and without separation of reaction products.- Periodic coordination and cooperation meetings with the CRM and the CEBEDEAU.
