Minimization of dust generation in steelworks' ore and coal stockyards by the use of filming agents

Objectif

The aim of the research programme is to examine the effects of different filming agents on a wide range of raw materials used in the iron and steel industry.

At integrated steelworks the various stages in the transportation and storage of large quantities of raw materials, from unloading at quays to delivery to preparation and production plant, give rise to serious problems of dust generation in the environment.

One of the existing methods of dust control throughout these stages, apart from the collection and extraction of dust at well-localized and controlled sources, is that of spraying the materials with just enough water to prevent the dust from dispersing. This method is often used in stockyards of coal, ores and fluxes where the raw materials are exposed to the elements, in particular to the sun and the wind, often for many months.

Although it produces reasonable results, it no longer constitutes a satisfactory answer to the problem of dust generation, owing to the enforcement of more stringent national and European legislation.

The above-mentioned problems can be circumvented by spraying with solutions of suitable filming agents.

When dissolved in water, which is then allowed to evaporate, they form a hard, compact crust on the piles of material, thus achieving a longer-lasting effect which is more resistant to weather conditions.

Research results will aim at determining the type, concentration and specific quantity of filming agent solution, and the spraying frequency necessary to control dust generation in stockyards under different weather conditions.

In view of the fact that the Italian steel industry uses a wide range of raw materials, as do other European steel companies, the results of this research programme may well prove useful to other Community countries.
