Improving the stability and performance of biological treatment facilities for coking plant effluents

Cel

The general objective of the project is to improve the performance as well as the time dependent stability of the treatment of the effluents from coking plants.
The objective aims of the research can be considered to be largely achieved and above-all validated via its application on an industrial scale.
In order to achieve the objective, a convergent approach has been worked out following a complementary path:

- attempting to identify the causes of instability in operation of the activated sludge treatment installations via the study of the variability of the influent, as well as research into methods of forecasting such perturbations,

- an experimental study of the phenomena of inhibition and toxicity of the effluents of the coking plant with respect to the treatment biomass. The objective being to define the critical threshold levels of concentration, so as to not exceed these when operating industrial installations,

- research directed at improving the design of the biological reactor (activated sludge tank),
- validation of the preceding concept by keeping track of an industrial coke plant effluent treatment installation (SIDMAR) built in accordance with an improved design as well as an attempt to effect on-line measurement of the inhibiting characteristics of the effluent.
