The behaviour of toxic metals during the plasma smelting of stainless steelmaking dust and the development of viable disposal practices

Objectif

The overall objective of this project is to achieve as near as possible complete recycling of toxic metals arising in the fume from electric arc stainless steelmaking, so that there is virtually no release of these pollutants into the environment, and no wastage of important material resources.

The plasma smelting of stainless steel arc-AOD dusts has been the subject of a metallurgical and economical study in an earlier ECSC research programme and a 8000 t/a plant, funded via the 1987 ECSC Steel Pilot Plant and Demonstration programme is currently being commissioned.

The purpose of the research is to increase the knowledge of the behaviour of toxic metals during the plasma process with the objective of converting the arc-AOD dust containing toxic metals into a reusable metallic alloy, an inert slag for roadstone and a concentrated dust containing zinc, lead and cadmium for sale to the zinc producers.
