Optimization of formaldehyde treatment to remove cyanide from blast furnace scrubbing water

Objective

The aim of the research is to contribute to the implementation of the cyanide abatement process of blast-furnace gas scrubbing waters by using formaldehyde, the interest of this process having been demonstrated in a previous research project (726/02/412/03). More specifically, the aim was identifying and testing the process-control possibilities for minimizing the utilized excess of reagent.
Taking into account the detection and measurement available means and the variability dynamics of the blast furnace gas washing waters, a two-step treatment strategy and the corresponding process-control methodology have been designed in their main features. Their effective use will necessitate the solving of annex problems and a pilot or industrial scale validation.
Unlike the previous exploratory research the work will focus exclusively on blast furnace scrubbing water, examining in particular plants which have to treat the offtake from closed scrubbing water circuits.

Special attention will be devoted to a plant having recently opted for this type of treatment. The work will supplement the determination and monitoring of reagent dispensing in an experimental installation functioning in tandem without the addition of H2O2.

Broadly, the programme of work will consist of:

- selection of parameters to indicate complete reaction and/or presence of excessive reagent which are compatible with instrument-based measurement in and industrial environment;

laboratory and, if possible, in situ testing and validation of measurement of the parameter(s) selected;

- study of the strategy for adjusting the dose of reagent taking due account of the inertia of the measuring system, that of the treatment process reactor and of the dynamics of effluent variation;

- overseeing of process implementation; assessment of performance and identification of areas for possible improvements and modifications as regards monitoring effluent before and after treatment and as regards the technique for regulating reagent dispensing.
