Study and development of characterization methodologies and separation systems for electrogalvanizing effluents

Ziel

The aim of the research is to identify suitable processes for recovering and recycling zinc and other recoverable acidic and alkaline substances from electrogalvanizing effluents.

The process effluents in question are normally subjected to physicochemical treatment, after which the clarified liquors are recycled or discharged into the drains, while the sludge is filter-pressed and then dumped. However, this method of disposal for sludges containing heavy residues is coming up against ever-increasing problems.

Sludges classified as special wastes contain large quantities of metals, especially zinc.

The environmental problems resulting from the types of wastes involved and the more complex treatment required are clear.

Measures adopted so far to recover zinc and other exploitable substances from washing water and leakages from machinery have been restricted mainly by the degree of pollution of the effluent streams and the low concentration of recoverable substances.

1 Characterization of production cycle effluents

The production cycle effluents will be identified, and alternative working practices proposed to reduce their quantity and improve their characteristics.

In particular, the continuous and non-continuous flows from the various production cycle processes will be analyzed individually.

The best sampling points for the various flows will be identified, together with the following factors:

- the components which may be exploitable;

- the undesirable components which affect the recovery and recycling of the exploitable components;

- the undesirable components which adversely affect the characteristics of sludges.

The properties of the continuous and non-continuous flows will then be analysed.

The purpose is to obtain quantitative data on:

- the concentration and quality of exploitable components (e.g. metals and their state in the solution);

- concentration and characteristics of undesirable components (e.g. oils).

2 Separation of sludges

The study will investigate the most suitable systems for the separation, collection, temporary storage and mixing of sludges so as to identify viable processes for the recovery of zinc and other recyclable solutions.

The innovative aspect of this research will the be the identification and optimization of a dedicated operation sequence with a view to acquiring an overall knowledge of the phenomena so as to move on from laboratory experiments to research on a semi-industrial scale.
