Characterisation, prevention and reduction of pollutants produced during degreasing of steel sheet

Cel

The overall aim of the research project is to reduce toxic contamination resulting from degreasing operations in initial steel processing (of both ordinary and stainless steels) by taking preventive action targeting degreasing baths and rinsing waters from surface treatment lines for flat products (sheets).

The more specific aims are:

- to identify more precisely the type of pollution (especially organic pollution) generated by these operations, not only via chemical analysis but also by an impact (toxicity) study to establish what types of pollution require priority action,
- to reduce the mass of concentrated waste (spent liquor) to be treated by introducing in-line treatment to increase bath life,
- to reduce carry-over of pollution and contamination of rinsing waters by the pollutants requiring priority action,
- to define techniques for treating residual pollutants at various stages:

concentrates produced by in-line bath maintenance,
spent bath liquor,
rinsing water with a view to obtaining recyclable water (in a closed circuit system) and obtaining a concentrate which can be treated with the above effluents.

These aims are accompanied by the need to maintain or improve the efficiency of the degreasing process in terms of current evaluation criteria or criteria available on the very short term.
