Study of soil contamination in dismantled coke oven plants and remediation measures

Obiettivo

The objective of present work was to confirm at laboratory scale the feasibility of using microwaves to heat up coke plant soils in order to evaporate contaminants and facilitate their extraction and treatment.
Successive experiments led to the determination of the dielectric properties of soils and of their evolution as a function of different parameters. On the basis of the experimental results, models were developed with the aim of optimizing the planned configuration of the heating network on site. The results given by the model were validated at laboratory scale.

As a conclusion, the results of our work confirm the feasibility of the treatment of P.A.H. contaminated soils by microwave in situ heating.
The decline in coal production in Europe as a result of the depletion of mineral deposits inevitably entails the closure and dismantling of old coke oven plants on production sites. Before these sites can be assigned to other job-creating activities, however, it is necessary to assess the degree of contamination of the soil resulting from coking activity (gas and dust deposits), waste deposits, pollutants transferred by effluent, etc.), and to introduce the requisite remedial measures if the level of pollution is too high.

The aim of this research is to establish a means of dealing with the problem and to carry out a technico-economic study of the various possible solutions.

The programme will be carried out in accordance with the following schedule:

- Inquiries made to operators of dismantled coke oven plants in order to identify areas likely to be contaminated, given the operating conditions of the plant prior to closure.
- Definition of a method of characterization of the site selected in order to minimize the costs of research and analysis.
- Complete characterization of the site by taking representative samples for analysis.
- Definition of possible treatment processes in the light of analytical results.
- Taking of representative samples for a treatment study.
- Laboratory examination of the processes selected in order to collect the basic information necessary to draw up a processing model.
- Technico-economic comparison of the various possible solutions.
