Experimental evaluation of remediation techniques for contaminated coking plant sites

Objetivo

The aim of the research project is to investigate the following aspects of pollution, taking the organic contamination of the soil at former coke oven sites as an example:

- Analysis of the form in which polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and BTX aromatics are present in the soil.
- The effect of the form in which the above contaminants are present on the effectiveness of decontamination methods.
- Increasing the effectiveness of soil decontamination in soil washing methods and microbial degradation in a bioreactor.
Overall, the results demonstrate that there is no universally applicable solution for the decontamination of PAH-polluted soils, owing to the heterogenous and complex composition of the environmental medium soil. It is therefore necessary to develop a rehabilitation method for each individual type of soil, taking account of the relevant factors, e.g. the subsequent use of the soil.
In the past ten years awareness of the hazards involved in contamination of the soil by toxic substances has increased considerably. Research has thus been devoted to developing methods or techniques to make safe or decontaminate polluted sites. At present, a variety of techniques are available such as encapsulation, and physical, chemical and biological treatment methods (extraction, incineration and microbiological degradation). However, these techniques cannot be applied uniformly as the types of contamination and the biological and hydrogeological conditions at contaminated sites vary greatly.

The project involved the testing of various biological and chemical/physical rehabilitation techniques and combinations thereof, with four selected PAH-contaminated soil types (filling material, sand, silt and clay). Techniques which had already been extensively tested were applied, and new techniques and combinations of techniques were developed. The general suitability of techniques for decontaminating the various soil types was investigated, and detailed studies of the principles of PAH decontamination by these techniques were carried out. Special attention was devoted to characterising the nature of PAH and BTX aromatics occurrence in the soil and its influence on the efficiency of decontamination methods. It was found that the nature of pollutant bonding is of fundamental importance for the efficiency of various techniques.
