Prediction and control of noise in the environment and in steelworks shops

Cel

At the present time, problems related to noise disturbance in the environment of steel shops are far from being solved.

The 85/337/CEE European Community Directive requires to carry out an impact study each time a new plant is built or an existing one is modified.

This situation produces, thereby, the necessity to have a tool able to carry out such study. The CEDIA proposes, as part of this new research work, to deal with the simulation of noise propagation in the environment.

The following three points will be developed:

- Adapting computer programs: the CEDIA already works with computer programs dealing with the prediction of sound pressure levels in the environment. This software package will be modified to take into account the specific features of large iron and steel industry sites.
- Defining a methodology suitable to 'in situ' measurement of the acoustical characteristics. It will allow to determine the values of the various parameters needed by the computer software.
- Creating databases compiling information in a twofold interest:
- As far as new plants are concerned, these databases will enable the impact assessment by providing the basic data that are not available right at the start of the study.
- And when existing plants are concerned, they will allow time-saving in the process of collecting data.
