Obiettivo - To define a dust sampling strategy for surface coal mining operations in order to allow determination of potential hazard.- to compare measurements obtained with continuous respirable dust monitors, high volume respirable, and the new inspirable dust samplers.- to gain a preliminary assessment of the effect of different weather conditions and mining operations on dust emissions from sites.A strategy has been developed, whereby workers' exposure to dust can be assessed, in open-air situations.During recent British Coal applications for planning permission to mine coal by opencast methods in South Wales, concern has been expressed about possible health hazard from inhalation of dust coming from opencast mining operations. Although little supportive evidence has been found for increased medical disorders, there is an increased awareness of possibly hazardous dust concentrations occurring at such sites. However, little is known about the magnitude and variaiblity of respirable and inspirable dust levels to be found in the air around surface mining operations. This project is a feasibility study aimed at evaluating possible sampling strategies for assessing dust emissions from surface mining operations.
