STANDARDIZATION IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS WITH EASTERN PARTNERS

Cel

The STEP project focuses on the cooperation in IT&T pre-normalization and standardization activities, which are essential to the creation and development of a large, unified, coherent and competitive IT&T market throughout Europe.

To efficiently reach its purpose, standardization must act as a bridge between research and industry. Therefore, better circulation of information about the standardization activities within the research community will indubitably have a positive impact on the research in the considered IT&T areas: incentive for research works, better exploitation of research results, etc. This project will contribute to the strengthening of research efficiency and exploitation of research results, which is precisely one of the targets of Copernicus.

To reach its objective, the project proposes six activities:
Analyse the current situation in Central and Eastern Europe countries represented in the consortium with regard to the status of IT&T standardisation and to the available technological infrastructure for information interchange;
Inform about ways to improve the access to standardisation information and bring support in this area;
Investigate ways to get standardisation and research organisations closer;
Inform about ways to improve circulation of information concerning pre-normalisation and normalisation at national level;
Investigate ways to improve the involvement of Central and Eastern Europe countries in the standards elaboration process;
Ensure results dissemination both within and outside the project.

The project results should help both to strengthen the involvement of Central and Eastern Europe in the IT&T standardization process and to improve the synergy between research, standardization and industry communities in Central and Eastern Europe. Synergy between these three communities should enable to better target requirements of industries for both standardization and research and, hence, will help in the re-orientation of both standardization and research to the socio-economical needs. This is essential to get the maximal benefits from the funds allocated to both sectors.

This synergy, together with a better cooperation between EU and Central and Eastern Europe standard makers should allow the achievement of better quality IT&T standards which is of prime importance for the European industry performances. For Central and Eastern Europe, it is also a necessary condition to increase the chances to get a competitive position on the pan-European market in high technological areas.
