APPLICATION OF ATM IN INFORMATION NETWORKS

Objetivo

The new broadband telecommunications services are becoming a reality, MANs (Metropolitan Area Networks) have been installed in several cities, and prototypes of ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switches for applications in B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) have been implemented and tested in several laboratories.

The first ATM products for LANs are appearing on the market, and B-ISDN field trials will start shortly on national and international bases. This opens a wealth of opportunities for the implementation of high-quality broadband services, but raises a number of questions and problems for the network operators, planners, and administrators. Many technical issues must be solved in order to provide reliable and cost-effective telematics services to a community of users.

This research proposal is aimed to the study of connectionless services in ATM networks from the following points of view:
1 - the suitability of high level protocols for operation above an ATM network, and the evaluation of their performance.
2 - the effectiveness and the impact on the quality of service of different traffic control policies in the case of connectionless services .
3 - the effectiveness of different routing algorithms in ATM networks.
4 - the characterization of the traffic generated by the interconnection of remote LANs and/or MANs.
5 - the subjective quality-of-service in VBR video applications.

The significance of the project and its expected achievements are strongly based on the state of the art in the technological field and on the fact that the group originating the proposal comprises different types of institutions:

University partners will try to develop adequate modelling approaches for the analysis of the performance of connectionless services in B-ISDN, and will test their accuracy against test simulation runs.
Industrial partners will develop significant scenarios for the application of the (simulation and analytical) models developed by the University partners, and they will increase their ability in the design of innovative broadband telecommunications services.
