Objective The aim of the project is to develop a model-based software system for traffic control in conurbations. It will consists of a traffic model based on knowledge attributed Petri-nets, an air pollution model coupled with the Petri-net model, and a tool for decision support for users in traffic administrations in the form of a hierarchical architecture. The time consuming simulation models for traffic and air pollution will be implemented on a parallel computer. Traffic control in Budapest will be the pilot application, though the system will be developed in such a manner that application to other conurbations is possible with little effort. Simulation results will be used to improve the control of traffic lights, to plan the construction of new roads, and to improve public transport systems.
