Obiettivo The aim of the research is to assess the different approaches used for determining acceptable limits for lifting heavy weights, and to examine the limits proposed. On the basis of this a simple screening method will be devised for work in mines involving manual handling, which can be applied by non-experts. This will reduce not only the risk of back pain for the workers, but also the costs arising from injuries of this nature. The project will examine published and unpublished limits and other data relating to the safe handling of loads. The results will then be used to devise a screening procedure which will be specifically designed for non-specialists. Following this, limited trials will be carried out to assess the utility and usability of the screening procedure and to determine the inter- and intra-observer variability in applying it. METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVEDThe trials may involve the use of video recorders and surface simulations of handling activities and/or underground applications. Where appropriate, the subjective assessments obtained may also be compared with more objective assessments, such as those provided by measurements of intra-abdominal pressure changes or computer-based biomechanical calculations.
