Cel The objective of the research is to develop and test a method for measuring the sound attenuation of hearing protectors worn by workers in specific situations in the coal and steel industries. The method will have to meet certain requirements, particularly in terms of simplicity and reliability.Preparatory phase a. Measurement of the attenuation offered by various types of hearing protector as worn by workers at work. The study will involve four types of hearing protector used at work by a total of 150 workers with different hearing thresholds. b. Establishment of standard frequency spectra for the most common sources of noise in the coal and steel industries, based as far as possible on existing measurement results. Execution phase Development of a simple test based on the measurement of signals as part of the testing of personal hearing protectors, taking into account differences in hearing thresholds among the test population. Laboratory testing of methods on test subjects . Finally, the test will be applied to individual workers who participated in the preparatory phase, and the results will be correlated with the measuring methods (see section 3). METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVEDA comprehensive measuring method developed by the NIPG-TNO (Netherlands Institute of Preventive Medicine) involving headphones and earmuffs will be used. The measurements methods referred to under a) will have to give similar results to the method described in ISO 4869. The measurements for establishing standard spectra will have to comply with ISO/DIS 1999.2 and the measuring apparatus with IEC 225, IEC 651 and IEC 804.
