Objetivo The purpose of the project is to find ways of improving the ergonomic risk prevention strategy currently applied to manual materials handling (MMH) activities in areas with restricted headroom that involve risks of back injury. We have the following specific aims: - further development, through computer-assisted procedures, of the analytical tools used to identify job demands involving risks of back injury (Part I); - determining the usefulness of "easy-to-measure" anthropometric data (changes in body height) for the ergonomic assessment of occupationally-induced strain on the spine (Part II); - extending knowledge of ergonomic design to avoid excessive strain on the spine when performing manual materials handling activities in areas with restricted headroom (Part III). METHODS AND MEANS BY WHICH THE AIMS ARE TO BE ACHIEVEDDevelopment of an ergonomic procedure for analysing work cycles, with particular reference to body position and posture (Part I). Modification of circadian changes in body height as an indicator of work-induced spinal strain (Part II). Study of the prophylactic effect of designing breaks in accordance with medico-mechanical criteria, with reference to work activities involving unfavourable bent-back postures.
