INSTALLATION OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM FOR THE REGULATION AND METERING OF HEAT IN EXISTING BUILDINGS

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility, economic and energy related advantages and the reliability of such systems which allow users to :
- regulate the internal conditions
- select appropriate operation cycles
- directly control consumption
and guarantee this type of system operation of a central heat production unit in existing buildings. Adoption of meets with various obstacles especially as regards the retrance of the users. The main objective of this project is therefore to provide a pilot installation which may be compared with other solutions.
The activities planned were completed and the results obtained confirmed the project assumptions. The Energy saving of 14.3% obtained during the first experimental season (winter 1991-1992) in the building located at N° 7 Via Marzabotto whose centralized heating system had been converted into a number of Independent systems was confirmed also during the 1992-1993 winter season.

A comparison of consumptions between the building at N°5 and N°7 Via Marzabotto shows that the annual savings obtained in the building converted into independent systems was 5.300.000 Lit equivalent to 17%.

A comparison of consumptions between the centralized system at N°7 Via Marzabotto and the diesel oil system at N°9, Via Marzabotto shows that the heat production unit cost is reduced by 35.8% with savings of 14.983.000 Lit.

REPLICATION

A great interest was shown by both customers requiring installations like the ones used within the framework of the project and by companies concerned with the installation and maintenance of heating plants. Through these activities it is estimated that approximately 4000 companies active in this sphere were contacted and informed and this activity of diffusion will be probably carried out.
The proposed project envisages the modernisation of the heating systems of two buildings owned by IACP, Ravenna, Italy, each consisting of 21 identical apartments in terms of both internal distribution and exposition of outer surfaces.
The experimental aspect lies in the installation of an integrated control/ management/ recording system of the heating units connected with the individual lodgings : the experience aims at evaluating the operating aspects (thermic comfort inside the lodgings) as well as the economics aspects (energy saving) of this system. Specifically, the study aims at calculating the amount of energy that can be saved during a winter season based on the conventional 150-day period of operation of the heating system.
The experiment will be conducted in the form of a systematic comparison of the consumptions obtained by the two identical buildings, the only difference being the installation of the temperature controlling and adjusting system in one building only. The parameters to be monitored include the temperature values measured and requested in all the apartments of the building controlled by the system; the general delivery and return temperature in both buildings, and the outside temperature.
The level of comfort will also be monitored in two sample apartments in each building, one located on the top floor and one located at an intermediate level, and both having similar features as far as the exposition and number of occupants are concerned.
For this purpose, the temperature and humidity will be monitored in two rooms of each apartment through special sensors connected with the units of the remote-adjustement and remote control system.
The experimental program includes the following steps :
- designing, installation, experimentation, reporting and promotion.
