MULTI-SECTOR APPLIANCE OF NEW MODULAR TECHNOLOGY IN LOW AND MEDIUM POWERED INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS

Objectif

The basic purpose of the project is the adjustment of a new innovative form of technology for the production of coolant at low temperatures, based upon the principal of absorption and the use of NH3 as the refrigerant fluid, and its application of a demonstrative nature in two companies each belonging to a different industrial sector considered as "typical", with different requirements both on the level of coolant and refrigeration power.
This is a shared cost project which intends to validate the new technology as a clear alternative for low and medium power industrial refrigeration applications, making possible, in an extremely wide sector of the Community's industrial fabric, a spectacular reduction in the consumption of primary energy, as well as the elimination of the CFCs used in the mechanical compression stage conventionally used in the production of coolant in the aforementioned sectors, the emission of which into the atmosphere has a negative effect upon the environment.L%
The real results achieved through the new technology implementation entered in operation.

The strategic aim of this shared cost innovation project is the development and adjustment of a new form of technology for the production of coolant at low temperatures (- 5 deg. C to - 35 deg. C) and its specific application, of a DEMONSTRATIVE nature, in two characteristic factories within the meat sector with different levels of demand for coolant.
This new Hispano-Dutch technology has been developed by a joint effort on the part of the firms CALFLUID SA (Vic, Barcelona) and COLIBRI BV (Kerkrade), and is based upon on the principle of Absorption and on the use of ammonia as refrigerant fluid, being characterised by the introduction of the following unique elements :
- MODULAR conception, in order to make possible its adaptation to the whole range of low and medium refrigeration power installations, and in the various industrial sectors, providing :
* A suitable response to the different levels of demand.
* High energy performance in all working conditions and on the various scales
of evaporation temperature.
* Operating flexibility.
- Introduction of a system of distributed control of the different working variables for the regulation and control of the plants, with a register of operations on a central computer and tele-management in real time.
- Design compatible with the exploitation of residual heat, wether from the process or from energy recovery systems, in order to potentiate the competitiveness of the technology from the point of view of the user who is applying it. This new technology for freezing at low temperatures is based on the principle of absorption and on the use of NH3 as a refrigerating fluid and, it each specific development responds to different designs with particular elements and configurations (exchange surfaces, etc.,...) the basic integrating principle is reflected in the following way.
The thermal contribution in the generator is made by steam which heats the binary mixture of ammonia/water to boiling, at which time the gases evaporate and pass into the rectifying column for gas purification, avoiding water slippage. Upon exiting the column there is a condenser cooled by tower water which condenses remaining water, obtaining the pure ammonia in a gaseous state, which is condensed in the condenser and led to the ammonia tank from where it is circulated through the cooler before being taken to the expansion valve.
The expanded ammonia is sent to the evaporator by a recirculation pump. The evaporated ammonia (gas) is sent to the absorber, heated in the cooler, where it is absorbed by the poor mixture from the generator, which has been cooled in the solutions recuperator at the same time that the rich solution from the absorber has been heated before going into the rectifying column.
To overcome the generator pressure upon exiting the absorber, a liquid pump takes the rich solution from the solution tank and to the generator.
