A LOW COST BUILDING ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR USE IN RESIDENTIAL HOUSING

i) To install a modular and fully integrated building energy management (BEM) system designed specifically for residential complexes into part of a local authority complex in Galway city.
ii) To demonstrate to local authorities and private housing agencies
(a) the potential savings which can be made by installing such a system.
(b) the long-term reliability and cost effectiveness of such a system.
(iii) To prove the commercial viability of the system by operating a lengthy field trial demonstrating the effectiveness of a simple, low cost BEM.

The present is targetted at medium to large housing cmplexes (100-10,000 units) which can be subdivided into smaller "heating" units of 8-128 units with a central boiler. This residential heating market remains largely untapped because of the cost of conventional systems. The prototype system is based on embedded processor technology designed and manufactured in-house in DSL.
This purpose of this project is to demonstrate a low-cost, building energy management package aimed specifically at the residential market. The system will be installed in an local authority housing complex in Galway, Ireland.
An "intelligent" outstation will monitor and controls 40 number individual apartments or housing units and a central boiler. A second outstations will perform monitoring functions on a second block of 20 flats. Both are linked to a remote, PC-based, system controller which provides real-time access to the outstations, alarm generation facilities for individual units.
This system, whilesimilar in its implementation to many existing BEMs, is unique for a number of reasons :
i) Significantly lower unit H/W and S/W costs than conventional systems.
ii) Reduction of consultancy and installation costs.
iii) Easy to use and customise - despite its low cost.
iv) Self-learning/algorithm - optimisation features.
v) Advanced telecomms features, including radio interface, and alarm facility, etc.
vi) Record keeping and billing facilities.
The commercial end-product will also be unique in its form and in the marketing and technical support strategies which are to be adopted. These take their lead from recent innovatory approaches adopted in the PC market place by companies such as Dell (US).
