SPARROW-HAWK-MODIFICATION OF HEAVY FUEL-OIL DIESEL MOTORS FOR BURNING NATURAL GAS BENEFITING BY NATURAL GAS DISTRIBUTION

Objectif

Modification of diesel motors burning heavy fuel-oil for burning natural gas, without altering the engine performance, (i.e. high power output, high power efficiency) and offering a great economical viability as the dual motor is liable to run either on gas or fuel-oil.
Increase the diffusion of natural gas in areas not yet connected.
Improve contractual conditions in the procurement of fuel.
Improve atmosphera conditions by reduction of polluting emissions.
Expected results :
- To run the Puleva power plant on natural gas.
- To disseminate this kind of motors in areas where natural gas is available.
- To enter markets non covered thanks to lower gas exhaust emissions, for installation urban areas.
- To improve the global efficiency of Puleva power plant by increasing the heat recovery by lowering the temperature of exhaust gases and minimizing maintenance costs.
- To retrofit existing fuel burning engines to gas or LNG operation at any later date.
The high pressure gas engine concept is fully based on the modern Sulzer ZA40S engine, with a minimum of modifications.
The adjustment of the engine for burning natural gas will consist of:
1) Equipment for the supply of natural gas at 220-250 bars consisting in a compressor station, connection and distribution pipings to the motors.
2) Control and regulation equipments of gas supply.
3) Cylinder heads completed with valves, injector, camshaft, pumps, instruments, etc.
4) Addition of heat recovery equipments in the boiler.
5) Control and monitoring equipments.
6) Safety devices to conform to the safety regulations in force in the EEC.
Four stroke gas engines have been on the market for quite a number of years.
The majority of these are carburated engines in which the gas is introduced to the intake air. The combustible mixture is compressed within the cylinder and ignited by a spark or a small amount of injected diesel fuel. The compression ratio of these engines is reduced compared to modern diesel engines in order to avoid uncontrolled autoignition (knocking) of the mixture.
As opposed to these low pressure gas engines, high pressure gas engines operate according to the diesel principle. After the compression stroke, the gas is injected into the compressed air with high pressure. A small amount of pilot diesel fuel is injected to ensure a smooth start of combustion.
The high pressure solution incorporates the following benefits for medium speed Sulzer engines:
The basic engine design remains unchanged :
- The same compression ratio can be used as on standard diesel engines because there is no risk of knocking. - The standard optimum valve timing can be maintained, since high pressure gas engines are not confronted with gas losses into the exhaust during scavenging.
- The same turbochargers can be used because the air demand and the thermodynamic cycle are unchanged. This implies that :
* The engine develops the same power output as the diesel of HFO version.
* The excellent load response behaviour of the diesel engine remains unchanged.
* Contrary to low pressure gas engines the high engine efficiency is not affected. Furthermore, the flat efficiency characteristic at part load is maintained.
The high pressure gas concept incorporates a great extend of economical versatility. Operation can be changed from gas to diesel fuel and the possibility to change back to HFO operation is preserved.
* Engine performance is insensitive to the composition of the gas in a wide range as well as to ambient conditions (in the same range as the standard diesel engine).
* State of the art low pressure gas engines have the substantial disadvantage of a low power density. For the same engine costs the BMEP is limited to approximately 16 bar with a corresponding output reduction of 25-35%. High pressure gas engines mostly require a gas compressor with a power consumption of only 5-6% in case of a 1 bar pressure supply or 1-1.5% in case of a 70 bar pressure supply.
