60 KW WIND TURBINE FOR LINICLATE SCHOOL AT BENBECULA

Obiettivo

A 60 kW wind turbine, to be used in combination with a 180 kW diesel generator set, is integrated into a new Community School, which has heating by air/water heat pumps, a swimming pool and a sophisticated Buidling Energy Management System. The objective effect significant diesel fuel savings by supplementing the diesel power during supply failures, which are on the Island's grid.
The wind turbine is installed at NEL's test site for trial measurements. Problems with the braking mechanism have been reported.
The 60 kW wind turbine has been installed at the Community School at Liniclate on the Island of Benbecula in Scotland after a period of 15 months testing at the National Wind Energy Test Centre at Myres Hill, East Kilbride, Scotland. The test period has shown the wind turbine can operate in parallel with the diesel sets without significant problems of supply power quality and that savings of up to 40% in diesel fuel use can be expected. The wind turbine was installed at the School in October 1990 and has generated 159,000 kWh to September 1994. Availability has been low due to control problems, which have so far prevented the wind turbine from running in parallel with the diesel generator. The wind turbine was manufactured by Windharvester of Hexham, England. Over 99% of the wind turbine output has been consumed by the School.
