Obiettivo The main objectives of the project are to demonstrate:that a broadband ATM PON is flexible, reliable and cost-effectivethat applications and services using ATM make efficient use of available resources and bandwidththat such applications and services fulfil real user needsthat system management issues for shared access can be resolvedinteroperability between ATM IBC islands through the Pan European ATM Network. Results are expected on two levels:network level: assessment of the performance of a broadband ATM PON under real life conditions, with real users and real traffic, reliability of the system, robustness and fault toleranceservice/application level: assessment of performance and suitability of ATM for broadband applications and services for small businesses by analysis of user feedback and evaluation of sites.Expected ImpactTo stimulate the deployment of ATM in the access area for both small business and residential usersTo trigger the commercial exploitation of multimedia broadband applications in the sectors of tele-medicine and tele-teaching.Main contributions to the programme objectives:Main deliverablesEnhancement of the ATM PON BAF prototype system.Contribution to the programmeSignificant contributions to ETSI on the standardisation of the VB5 interface and support for the world wide FSAN (Full Service Access Network) initiative, which resulted in the rapid approval of the ITU-T G.983 recommendation on ATM-PON systems.Technical ApproachFour user trials, in four different countries, will be defined and the users provided with applications, in the area of tele-medicine and tele-teaching, according to real user needs. In two trial sites an enhanced release of the broadband access system developed by the RACE II project R2024 BAF will be deployed. The trial sites will be interconnected via the National Hosts and the Pan European ATM Network. Derived activities fall into four categories:applications definition and development, comprising installation and maintenance of user equipmentenhancements to the BAF system to make it suitable for a trial environment, involving: extension of the Management System to fit the operator's needs; increase of performance monitoring functionality; improvement of the reliability of the system; implementation of additional low cost user-network interfaces; analysis of the impact on the ATM-PON of the VB5 interface requirementsuser trial definition and organisation, including interfacing with other management systems, operation in a multi-management system environment and interconnection of the trial sites through the PEANassessment of the access system under 'real life' conditions, through performance and evaluation of experiments and analysis of user feedback.A very promising way to deliver the large amount of information required by multimedia applications to the users is to deploy advanced PONs (Passive Optical Networks) as access networks, exploiting the large transport capacity of the optical fibre.Access System Reference ConfigurationThe ATM-PON used in BONAPARTE connects up to 32 termination points at a maximum distance of 10 km, and is able to support up to 81 users. The total transmission capacity of the access system is 622 Mbit/s both up and downstream, which can be divided in a flexible way from 64 kbit/s to 155 Mbit/s per user.Summary of TrialThe trial sites are located in Madrid, Turin, Hamburg and Basel. They will be interconnected via the four National Hosts and the Pan European ATM Network. In Madrid and Turin the enhanced access network will be deployed enabling the servicing of users in a distance range of 0-10km.TeleteachingA number of academic institutions are the users of the tele-teaching trials. Lectures on latest communication technologies are established on a weekly basis. The application provides tele-presence of the professor giving the lecture and tele-conference facilities to allow the audience to participate in the discussions customary to the academic environment. CSCW functions such as an interactive white board, shared application support, shared documents and tele-pointers facilitate and enrich the discussion. Multimedia retrieval functions allow access to a large data base for provision of background information.Configuration for the Tele-teaching ScenarioTelemedicineTwo radiological clinics and different academic institutions are the users participating in the tele-medicine trials. Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Computerised Tomography (CT) medical imaging equipment are connected to the network enabling tele-consultation of medical image archives, tele-presence and tele-conference for remote image displaying as well as tele-conference for real time co-operative diagnosis while the patient is still in the MR or CT equipment.General scenario of the tele-medicine applicationKey IssuesUsability of tele-medicine and tele-teaching applicationsManagement interoperability between different IBC islandsVB5 interface analysis and definitionFlexible and low cost user network interfacesSystem resilience.
