Future radio wideband multiple access systems

The overall objective of FRAMES (Future Radio Wideband Multiple Access Systems) is to define, to develop and to evaluate a wideband and efficient multiple access scheme which fulfils the UMTS requirements. Based on this scheme a specification for a UMTS air interface will be defined and additional contributions prepared which will serve as inputs towards the UMTS standardisation process taking the backward compatibility to 2nd generation mobile radio systems into consideration.
The main focus of the project is the air interface definition, validation and demonstration to meet all relevant operating environments and UMTS services from narrowband up to wideband data services. The project is developing a pair of base station demonstrators and mobile terminals to demonstrate the basic functionality of the FRAMES specification.
In the first phase the two potential Hybrid Access schemes "Slotted Multiple Access (SMA)" and "Code and Time Division Access (CATS)" have been investigated and merged to the final "FRAMES Multiple Access (FMA)" scheme.
This implies the refinement of both basic schemes and harmonisation in terms of clock rates, carrier spacing and bandwidths, which has led to the merging of the original schemes and finally to the two modes

of the FMA concept.
The FMA concept lends itself to the introduction of novel technologies, such as joint detection, multi user detection for interference rejection, advanced coding schemes such as turbo codes and adaptive antennas which contribute to more efficient utilisation of the UMTS frequency bands.
The wideband carrier has capabilities to carry traffic from a few kbit/s up to 2 Mbit/s with fine granularity and selectable QoS-parameters (BER and delay).

A adequate hardware platform has been selected to offer necessary bearer services to validate and demonstrate both high-speed packet data services, circuit switched services and the UMTS service flexibility, e.g. adjustable QoS. The hardware platform provides the validation of 2 Mbit/s.

FRAMES is already contributing to standards bodies as ETSI and in particular in SMG2.

For the future, research topics concentrate on a common hardware and software platform for the detailed investigation, evaluation and optimisation of both modes to the most possible extent. FRAMES will validate both physical layers and provides expected results in an phased approach to standardisation bodies. The standards contribution plan is aligned with the milestones of UMTS standardisation bodies.
Expected Impact
In Europe, ETSI TC SMG is the technical committee responsible for the standardisation of the UMTS. It is expected that the air interface is the major new issue of this new standard to support services up to high bit data rate and FRAMES will contribute with its air interface specification to meet these requirements which are expected to be in commercial use around the year 2008.

Instrumental in the consensus formation and the timely adoption by ETSI and ITU of the UTRA (UMTS Radio Access) concept. Novel CDMA join detection scheme demonstrated by means of the TDD (Time Division Multiplex) demonstrator
Technical Approach
The project is structured into two technical core tasks, addressing system specification and demonstrator.
The Core Task System addresses the system definition, development and optimisation and finally the specification which includes requirements and synthesis by means of liaison with potential UMTS operators. In addition it defines the air interface, radio network functions and investigates the implications upon the access networks, undertaking validation by simulation.
The Core Task Demonstrator is developing a platform to validate the defined air interface scheme and performance in its basic functionality. In addition, joint demonstrations and trials with other ACTS projects will be carried out.
Summary of Trial
The Project will provide two base stations and two mobile terminals for demonstrations of the defined air interface. It anticipates to demonstrate medium and high bit rate applications within an UMTS environment in conjunction with other ACTS Projects i.e. FIRST, MultiPort and RAINBOW.
The Network oriented demonstration that involves mainly RAINBOW and FRAMES will show the ability to have different types of radio interfaces within the same network infrastructure. Whereas, the Terminal Projects FIRST, MultiPort and MOMUSYS will complement the trial with user Terminals and Multimedia applications.
Key Issues
"To make UMTS Happen", to facilitate a new level of enhanced applications and services to users, strengthening the market growth and competitive capability of the European industry. More specifically, the project is developing an optimised and validated air interface definition for Third Generation systems in suitable timescales to secure adoptions by standards bodies according to the ETSI milestones and has been structured to create an industrial consensus.
To define, develop and evaluate a hybrid multiple access scheme to support the full range of UMTS services from narrow up to wideband services.
To investigate the impact of the air interface definition on related network functions and architectures.
To build a demonstrator for validation of the air interface and to carry out trials in co-operation with other ACTS projects.
To submit technical contributions to standards bodies.
