Backfill behaviour in emplacement drifts and boreholes in a salt repository

Ziel

The project proposal complies to Area C "Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal and Decommissioning" of the specific RTD programme "Nuclear Fission Safety". The objective of the project is to develop further the scientific and technical knowledge for construction, operation, and sealing of a repository for long lived heat generating radioactive waste in rock salt and to extend the basis for the performance of repository safety assessments.
The work will be performed in connection with the in-situ test "Thermal Simulation of Drift Emplacement" (TSS) which is being carried out in the Asse salt mine in a test field representing a typical section of an emplacement panel in a repository in saliferous formations.
Particularly the following phenomena and processes and the interactions between them will be investigated:
- temperatures in the repository near-field
- stresses in backfill and host rock
- backfill compaction
- host rock deformation
- gas generation and transport in backfill and host rock.
In-situ measurements in the TSS test field are an important part of the project. The project also includes laboratory measurements of material parameters which economically cannot be derived in situ, a benchmark study to enable a comparative analysis of different models for crushed salt, and verification and validation of thermomechanical codes and models. The project will be carried out by experts in this specific field from France (G.3S) Germany (BGR, GSF, FZK/INE), Spain (ENRESA, UPC), and The Netherlands (ECN).
