Study of the effect of heat and radiation on the near field of a HLW or spent fuel repository (test phase III)

Objective

The understanding and the evaluation of near field effect of a HLW or spent fuel is one of the key issues in the safety assessment of geological disposal based on the multibarrier concept.
To study the effects of heat and radiation on the near field clay and the engineered barriers, the SCK/CEN launched the Cerberus project under the third framework of the CEC programme (1990-1994).
The purpose of the phase III of the Cerberus project is to evaluate the behaviour of engineered barriers and argillaceous host rock by an extensive sampling programme around experiments performed at different levels of temperature and radiation like Cerberus, Atlas and Cactus experiments performed in the Hades facility. The sampling programme will allow a qualitative evaluation of the behaviour of the repository components. It will be used as case tests for the thermo-hydro-geochemical model.
At the end of the project, the performance of the repository components will be established on basis of a well funded consensus.
